MELKA CONTURE, ADADI MARIAM Drive 50 kms South of Addis Ababa on the Addis Butajira road on the bank of the upper Awash river. Visit an archaeological site for early stone age tools. Continue through the country side to visit 13th century rock-hewn church of Adadi Mariam which is considered as an extension of the Lalibella rock-hewn churches. The place named is after a certain tree which is commonly found in the vicinity called "Adadi" in Oromo language. MENAGESHA, ADDIS ALEM MARIAM Drive West of Addis Ababa passing through rolling farmland and wooded hill sides and visit Geffersa reservoir with its many species of birds. Drive through the supa indigenous juniper forest which covers the lower slopes of mount Wuhocha that rises more than ten thousand feet. Emperor Menelik's strangely decorated small church of Debre Zion at Addis Alem is worth seeing. AMBO AND WONCHI Drive through potters' village to the West. On your way visit Geffersa reservoir with many species of birds and drive across the Menagesha Forest to Ambo, source of the well known bottled mineral water and the vine yards and the water falls of Guder. Drive to the left of Ambo town through extremely scenic landscape to see the crater lake of Wonchi. Down ward from the top of the hills one can be seen the Monastery on the island of the beautiful lake Wonchi. DEBRE LIBANOS AND PORTUGUESE BRIDGE Drive across the eucalyptus wooded Entoto mountain range and visit the 13th century monastery of Debre Libanos and the new church perched on the rim of a dizzying gorge |
