HISTORIC ROUTE TO AXUM, LALIBELLA, GONDER AND BAHARDAR (BY ROAD)

After an early breakfast, leave Addis on Gojam road. Some stopover at Debre Libanos Monastery and a picnic lunch. Continue to Dejen. Dinner and overnight at Dejen. After an early breakfast on the second day drive to Bahirdar. Lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
On the third day, sight-seeing tour of Bahardar including the market, the palace of former emperor Haile Selassie,(Bezawit Palace), small scale cottage industry where craftsmen specialize in making boats from papyrus reeds for fishing.
Dinner and overnight in Bahardar. On the fourth day, drive 32 km South-East of Bahardar and walk up some distance and then proceed to visit the thundering "Tiss-Issat" Falls which means "Smoking Water" in Amharic. Drive back to your hotel for lunch afternoon four hour boat excursion on Lake Tana to Ura-Kidane Mihret on Zeghie peninsula and Kibran Gabriel(allowed for men only). Dinner and overnight in Bahardar.
On the firth day, drive for Gonder - the 17th Century Ethiopian capital. Lunch en route. Afternoon sight-seeing of Gonder town including the castle of King Fasilledas, the open air bath, the monasteries of Qusquam and Debre Brehan Selassie Church with its 16th Century paintings and frescoes. Return to your hotel. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.
On the sixth day of the tour, drive for Axum, the holy city of Ethiopia, dating back 2000 years and cradle of Ethiopia civilization of Axumite Kingdom.
On the seventh day visit of Axum which includes the tomb of King Ezana, the pedestals of Maishum(the bath of the Queen of Sheba), the park of stelae, the old and new St. Mary Churches of Zion. Legend has it that the table of the Holy Ark of the Covenant rests there. Overnight and dinner at Axum. On the eighth day of the tour, depart for Mekele. Afternoon sight-seeing in Mekele which includes the old castle of Emperor Yohannes and the museum. On the ninth day of the tour, drive to Lalibella, lunch en route. Dinner and overnight in Lalibella.
On the tenth day of the tour, visit the famous eleven rock-hewn churches, and the village named after the King who initiated the construction of these churches in the 12th century. Dinner and overnight in Lalibella.
On the eleventh day of the tour, drive back to Dessie, the capital of Wollo province. Lunch en route. Late in the afternoon, visit the monastery of St. Estifanos on the Island of Haik, which has very long and rich legends. Dinner and overnight in Dessie.
On the twelfth day of the tour, drive to Addis Ababa through the scenic highlands of central Ethiopia.
